I am Unique!

There are so many of us in the world, yet each one of us is original and irreplaceable. How is it possible? Thanks to some characteristics that uniquely identify us and allow each of us to affirm: I am unique!

We have selected 10 of these characteristics that make each of us UNIQ∙Ǝ!

THE DNA

Humans share 99.5 percent of their DNA; yet the remaining 0.5 is enough to make us different from all the others. In fact, that small percentage contains about 16 million nitrogenous bases that hold the DNA strands in our cells together, two by two. There are four nitrogenous bases; adenine, cytosine, guanine and thymine, so there are four possible combinations raised to the power of 16 million.

Basically, thanks to this small percentage, which however hides a huge number of combinations, the probability that two individuals have the same genome is zero.

THE VOICE

The sound of our voice is the sum of many components: the noise produced by the air when it vibrates through the larynx; the way the air bounces in the mouth and nose and how it turns into words, thanks to the shape of the palate, tongue, lips and cheeks. It is highly unlikely that two people have a perfectly identical larynx, mouth, nose, teeth or  muscles; the resulting voice is therefore unique and easily recognizable.

THE BEAT OF THE HEART

Each heart is different in size and shape. If we try to record the activity of a heart with an electrocardiogram, we will obtain three peaks: the P wave, corresponding to the impulse that contracts the upper chambers of the heart (the atria), the set of three Qrs waves, which represents the contraction of the lower chambers (the ventricles), and the small T wave, which corresponds to the relaxation of the heart after the contraction of the ventricles. By virtue of the diversity of each heart, the height, length and distance of the peaks vary from person to person: no one beats the same as another.

THE EYES

Not only do each of us have different eyes from other individuals, but our left eye is different from the right and , thanks to a set of characteristics of the iris, both are unique! Before we are born, an intricate network of muscles, ligaments, blood vessels and pigmented cells forms within us. This network determines the color, depth, furrows, ridges and spots of each eye, which is distinguished by over 200 unique points, detectable by the iris recognition systems, used for example in airports.

THE EARS

In the world there is no ear equal to the other and even in the same person the left is a little different from the right. The complex of ridges and furrows of the cartilages of our ears is particularly complex and particular, to the point that since the 1950s this set of parameters has also been used in investigations at the scene of a crime. The ear develops, after about 5 weeks from conception, from 6 small protuberances on the sides of the head; the genes determine the shape. However, the uterine environment also affects the final appearance of the ear.

FINGERPRINTS

Genetics give them their shape and size, but the prints change up to the seventh month of pregnancy, depending on the pressure of the maternal uterus walls and the movement of the amniotic fluid. This means that even the footprints of two twins can have minimal differences, represented by the dermatoglyphs, ridges and skin furrows that characterize the last phalanx of each finger. It should be emphasized that fingerprints are forever and in case of cuts, the skin regrows with the same characteristics.

THE SMELL

Our "thermal cloud", as scientists at the University of Bristol define it, is composed of 44 different components, the combination of which is so characteristic that in the future it could be used at airport controls or to identify any traces at crime scenes, as the British Forensic Science Service is already trying to do.

THE PACE

Tell me how you walk and I'll tell you who you are: in 90% of cases it is possible to recognize a person exclusively based on the way they walk, thanks to the small difference in length between one leg and another, to the musculature, the bone structure, the weight. These characteristics become even more pronounced if instead of walking we start running! There is software that can measure all these differences and precisely identify people based on these parameters, so much so that we are thinking of introducing them instead of passwords.

THE NAILS

Thanks to the small roughness that form on the surface of the nails, it is also possible to uniquely identify a person, as for example the researchers of the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, who exploit three different types of scans of the ring finger nail, middle finger nail and index finger nail. Too bad that this procedure gives a valid result for a limited period of time: in fact, with the regrowth of the nails, the map created by these scans radically  changes after 6 months.

THE BACTERIA

Each one of us has our own microbiota: over a kilo of microorganisms, which defend us from infections, are divided as follows: a thousand grams of bacteria in the intestine, 200 on the skin, 20 in the mouth and genital mucosa, 10 in the nose. Our microbiota is different from anyone else's and varies throughout our life. Today science studies its genetic heritage, the microbiome, because in our body 3.3 million genes are bacteria and only 23 thousand are human.

Uniqueness for man has always been an essential value: with the evolution of technology, will only unique pieces be produced in the industrial field in the future?

With UNIQ∙Ǝ! this future is already an impressive present, find out why!
